Selma Uamusse amounts to much more than a simple combination of her various artistic adventures. Her music is a manifesto for the harmony that surrounds us, offering us a positive look at the world. A way of fighting and hoping for a freer society, with more love.
Selma Uamusse’s powerful voice and brilliant performances have helped her to shine in a wide variety of musical genres, ranging from projects such as WrayGunn and Cacique’97 to Gospel Collective and Rodrigo Leão. Her versatility is also recognised in the theatre, cinema and visual arts.
Her debut album was Mati in 2018, in which she explored an organic encounter between her Mozambican roots, reflected in the lyrics, rhythms and traditional instrumentation of her songs, electronic music and a whole series of influences amassed over the years of performing and listening.
With her own distinct identity, aware of the past, but imagining the future, she followed this in 2020 with the release of her second album, Liwoningo (which means “light” in chope, a traditional Mozambican language), produced by Guilherme Kastrup, who won a Grammy for the albums A Mulher do Fim do Mundo and Deus é Mulher of the highly acclaimed and equally award-winning Elza Soares. This is a record that adds spice to the African intangible heritage from Mozambique, with an Africanness that continues to inspire lyrics and melodies – and which expands this whole sphere of influence into an extremely honest panglobal music, and it is here, on the stage of CCB’s Destemporada Summer Season that she will be performing it live.
