This program highlights the Twelve Sephardic Songs by Fernando Lopes-Graça, based on songs presented by Michel Giacometti. The composer’s interest in Spanish-Portuguese Jewish music is intriguing. Little known to the Portuguese public until recently, these songs for voice and piano, some orchestrated in 1971, reveal Lopes-Graça’s pianistic ability. Additionally, the programme includes works by Milhaud and Bernstein, ending with Hebrew chants by Lord Byron, which demonstrate empathy for the Jewish cause. Byron reinvents biblical texts, challenging norms and provoking religious sensibilities with his veiled sensuality.
