Recital
By the time of his premature death at the age of 31, in 1828, Franz Schubert had already produced a legacy of around 600 Lieder – a genre of German Romanticism that intrinsically unites poetry and music. The fair maid of the mill, the first major cycle by the Austrian composer, brings together poetry by Wilhelm Müller (poet, philologist, and historian) and provides a bucolic journey that oscillates between naïve optimism and anguish and despair in the face of unrequited love.
