Two of the most prestigious instrumentalists from the Portuguese Symphony Orchestra will be performing as the soloists in Brahms’ so-called Double Concerto. Written in the summer of 1887, this was the composer’s last orchestral work, which caused some bewilderment due to the fact that it was not centred on the piano. The concerto was first performed by the cellist Robert Hausmann and the violinist Joseph Joachim, conducted by Brahms himself.
Le Cid is an opera by Massenet, first performed in 1885. Despite its enormous popularity in the late nineteenth century, the opera later fell into disfavour among audiences. This did not happen, however, with the ballet music written for Act II, which continues to be performed regularly as a concert suite.
