Allegro molto appassionato (fast and very passionately). This is how this programme begins, with one of the most famous concertos for violin and orchestra in the whole History of Music, Mendelssohn’s op. 64. The violinist Ana Pereira is responsible for “setting the tone” of the melody, which everyone instantly recognises. Immediately afterwards, we will listen to Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony. For some, this is a call of destiny, while for others it is the beginning of a dazzling journey that leads us from movement to movement and ends in a triumphant finale. Completed in 1808, after four years of maturation, this composition has become a symbol of musical romanticism, the ostentation of individual willpower and an untranslatable and pure aesthetic idealisation. – Rui Campos Leitão
