On the subject of the New Year, Fernando Pessoa once wrote a poem declaring it to be the “Fiction that something begins!” and that, like a river, it “begins only in thought.” So let it begin in thought, then — and preferably inspired by good music. In its most virtuosic expression, however centuries-old it may be, music possesses the power to transform us whenever we grant it significance. Be they waltzes or polkas, they inspire both reflection and transformation. It adds something different to time, which never stops and is always new. The enchantment of facing another 365 days lies in the fact that they are not yet History — as though they were 365 blank bars of music. Happy 2027!
Pre-concert talk by Rui Campos Leitão at 10:30 am and 4:30 pm.
