Conductor Emilio Pomàrico returns to Portugal to perform the Pastoral Symphony, one of the most bucolic works in the symphonic repertoire. It is hard to believe that it premiered side by side with the Fifth Symphony in December 1808. It evokes rural life through the transfiguration of nature into music, expressing the feelings of those who inhabit such landscapes. Across five movements, it transcends the boundaries of classical form to guide us through a contemplative journey, yet one animated by the living pulse of sensations and emotions. In this concert, it is paired with the timbral, harmonic, and melodic poetics of Ana Seara. Before that comes a small symphony — or perhaps a suite; in any case, the sequence of Overture, Scherzo and Finale with which Schumann ventured into the loftiest flights of orchestral writing.
Pre-concert talk by Rui Campos Leitão at 4:30 pm.
