The Maat Saxophone Quartet’s programme offers a musical journey through the songs of revolution, crossing aesthetic and geographical boundaries to celebrate freedom, resistance and collective identity. Beginning with Tributo a Carlos Paredes, a symbol of individual expression in times of oppression, the repertoire explores landmark works such as Fernando Lopes-Graça’s Canções Heróicas, arranged for saxophone quartet by Daniel Ferreira.
Alongside classics such as Grândola, Vila Morena and Acordai, the programme also includes Blackbird, associated with the civil rights movement, in an arrangement specially created for the Maat Saxophone Quartet by composer Camiel Jansen, broadening the perspective to an international context of revolution. The programme culminates with Amor Gigante, by José Mário Branco, a work inspired by several string quartets, including Maurice Ravel’s, whose iconic fourth movement brings the programme to a close.
More than a concert, this is a musical manifesto that seeks to intertwine memory, art and freedom.
On the days when the Music at the Museum Series takes place, Antena 2’s programme A Voz das Cores, created by Andrea Lupi, will be entirely dedicated to the concert and the artworks on display at MAC/CCB.
Guided tour by João Mateus at 3:30pm.
