The name of George Gershwin immediately brings to mind the Broadway musicals, but also the combination of the popular and erudite genres that allowed his music to flow just as easily on the stages of theatres and concert halls as on the cinema screens. This is beautifully demonstrated by the orchestral symphonic poem An American in Paris, the same music that Vincente Minnelli made famous in the film with the same name starring Gene Kelly. And everyone knows the opera Porgy and Bess, from 1935, and, above all, the song Summertime. On stage, the music accompanies the representation of a tragic love story that portrays the life of black communities in the southern United States a century ago – “summarised” by the composer himself in his orchestral suite Catfish Row. This programme also includes the world première of a concerto that intertwines the unmistakable sounds of the saxophone and music of Luís Tinoco. – Rui Campos Leitão
