Sexta Maior
Premiered in 1735 at the Paris Opera, Les Indes Galantes is one of Jean-Philippe Rameau’s most emblematic works and a hallmark of the ballet à entrées genre, uniting independent episodes under the theme of the triumph of love. Set in exotic lands—from Turkey and Peru to Persia and North America—it reflects the 18th-century European fascination with distant cultures, more imagined than real.
Guided by the allegorical figure of Love, the audience is drawn into a journey of fantasy, contrasting affects, and rich expressivity. Rameau’s music combines orchestral brilliance with dramatic refinement, shifting between the vitality of dance and the subtlety of vocal writing.
Here, the soprano takes centre stage, embodying a wide range of characters and emotions. Ana Vieira Leite rises to this challenge with expressive nuance and versatility, in dialogue with the Ludovice Ensemble, celebrating the elegance and imagination of the French Baroque.
Pre-concert talk by Fernando Miguel Jalôto at 7:30 pm.
