Music
Sexta Maior
Two of Bach’s finest cantatas, composed in Weimar (1714) and Leipzig (1726), respectively, are brought together here with impressive works by Scarlatti and Stradella. The distance between the austerity of Lutheran piety and the fervent “emotionalism” of the Mediterranean may seem insurmountable. Yet Bach so admired the compositions of his Neapolitan counterparts that he created his own “parodies” of them in his work. In this concert, Divino Sospiro and Ann Hallenberg demonstrate equal mastery of both musical idioms.
Pre-concert talk by Massimo Mazzeo at 7:30pm.
