One of the aspects that best distinguishes Beethoven’s music is the impression that it is never restricted to a recreational function or the apparatus of technical virtuosity. It presents itself as an expression of ideals, suggesting a privileged relationship with the world and posterity. It has thus become universal, and it is now possible for us to contemplate it with the familiarity of an ever-present voice despite being more than two centuries old. This resolute aura of Beethoven’s figure corresponds, however, to the intermediate period of his career, which was announced by the Eroica Symphony. His five piano concertos allow us to follow the creative path that brought him to this point. The first three belong to an earlier phase. During this era, Haydn and Mozart were references to Beethoven. The last two more reflect the drive and audacity that became his «brand image.»
