Brahms’ Violin Concerto has always divided opinions. The symphonic grandeur leads some to see it as a concerto ‘against’ the violin, while others view it as a concerto ‘against’ the orchestra. Nonetheless, all lament that he did not compose more works in this format. It unfolds in a disquieting balance, in a succession of agreements, surprises, and vibrant melodies. These sublime forty minutes are entrusted to the performance of the prestigious German violinist Franz Peter Zimmermann and conductor Pedro Neves leading the Lisbon Metropolitan Orchestra. Before that, the beautiful Nocturne composed by Joly Braga Santos at the age of eighteen paves the way for the absolute premiere of another work by Miguel Azguime – fittingly, a Concerto for Orchestra.
