This architecture studio based in Tokyo, was founded in 1992, by couple Yoshiharu Tsukamoto and Momoyo Kajima. Their practice includes buildings, research and art practice. Their research focuses on the urban conditions of micro-architecture and ad hoc architecture, and guides their innovative approaches to the challenges of building in small, irregular, ephemeral spaces in the urban and suburban fabric.

Critical Distance 2018

Starting by documenting the urban reality of Tokyo, Atelier Bow-Wow published several books in the shape of guides, which introduce the reader to the ad-hoc nature of the urban landscape. They are the authors of the concept “Pet Architecture”, that involved a study documenting tiny buildings that fill the cracks of the city, and are adapted and recreated by its inhabitants.
Atelier Bow-Wow is this: constant research and its several manifestations: in buildings, publications, or “micro public spaces” made by the duo, trying to recreate some of the behaviours and meetings that happen in the city, transporting them into an installation in a gallery. In the way they design, this studio creates situations more than objects, leaving the process so unexpected meetings can happen and allowing space for users to adapt and appropriate the space.

A talk with Paulo Martins Barata
