Competition is the most open and free way of gaining access to architectural commissions. But, above all, it is the best way of solving a specific architectural, urban and territorial problem. Because of their nature, architectural design contests compare different alternative solutions for dealing with the same situation. This normally anonymous competition between equals encourages experimentation and speculation, in a determined and generous search for the ideal project.
Curator Luís Santiago Baptista
Architectural competitions offer the possibility for an interpretation of Portuguese modernity. From the national pavilions erected at the great universal expositions to the public equipment programmes funded by the European Community, including unique examples such as Expo 98, competitions can present a possible portrait for the transformation of a country. In this sense, the “Architecture in Competition” exhibition provides a critical record of this journey through Portuguese modernity. A journey in which Portuguese architects and the country’s Architects’ Association have played a fundamental role.
