And the same phrase could be applied to this theatre play made up of dinner jackets, champagne, roses, camelias and lots of malice. But, seen from the present day, these Private Lives amount to one of the cruellest analyses of marital relations. In the sweetness of a spring spent on the Côte d’Azur, how much poison, how much evil, how much lost love can we abide? A masterpiece that we want to revisit, written by a great and fundamental author, so often “underestimated”. After Pinter, Williams and Miller, who comes next?
