Gustav Mahler invoked the Creative Spirit in his 8th Symphony. After stints at the Vienna State Opera, he spent summers at Lake Wörthersee, where he composed rigorously. In 1906, suddenly inspired, he created the two-part symphony, which begins with Veni Creator Spiritus and follows with Goethe’s poem Faust. The premiere in September 1910, with more than 1000 musicians, made Mahler famous.
Pre-show talk at 4:30 pm (Sunday, September 15th) and at 7:30 pm (Tuesday, September 17th) with musicologist Rui Campos Leitão.
Exclusive activity for ticket holders for the concert.
