An unmissable annual tradition returns to Centro Cultural de Belém’s Main Auditorium, bringing together the talent and energy of the Orquestra de Câmara Portuguesa and the Jovem Orquestra Portuguesa. Following the success of previous celebrations, the two orchestras invite audiences on an epic journey from darkness to light, under the direction of Pedro Carneiro.
The programme opens with the world premiere of a new orchestral work by young composer Marco Pereira, commissioned by CCB. This is followed by one of the most memorable moments from Beethoven’s opera Fidelio, marking the bicentenary of the composer’s death, performed by the outstanding Portuguese tenor Luís Gomes, winner of the prestigious Zarzuela Don Plácido Domingo Ferrer Prize and the Audience Prize at Operalia.
After the interval, the OCP and JOP embark on an emotional journey from the depths of pain and tragedy to jubilant triumph. Gustav Mahler’s monumental Symphony No. 5 in C-sharp Minor is a masterpiece that transcends late Romanticism, serving as a bridge between the sensibilities of the 19th century and the avant-garde movements of 20th-century modern music.
Pre-concert talk to be announced at 4:30 pm.
