The Domestic Symphony, Op. 53 is a unique work by Richard Strauss, portraying his family life through a symphonic poem. It reflects a period of stability, with musical themes representing himself, his wife Pauline, and their son Franz. Completed in 1903, it premiered in 1904 at Carnegie Hall in New York, and later in Vienna under Gustav Mahler. Though well received, its domestic theme drew some criticism.
Four Last Songs, composed in 1948, is one of Strauss’s final works. Marked by deep emotional intensity and musical maturity, it premiered in 1950 at London’s Royal Albert Hall.
Pre-concert talk by Rui Campos Leitão at 4:30 pm.
