In January 2025, the João Roiz Ensemble, in collaboration with Alexandre Delgado, launched Peregrinação Beethoven 2025–2027, commemorating the bicentenary of the death of Ludwig van Beethoven (1770–1827). This nationwide project celebrates the composer’s life and work and his contribution to European humanism.
Over three years, the Ensemble is performing Beethoven’s complete chamber music for strings — trios, quartets and quintets — across Portugal. Unprecedented in the country, this initiative offers audiences an in-depth understanding of the composer’s music and ideas. The concerts feature live commentary by Alexandre Delgado, who engages with the audience, placing the works in their historical and aesthetic contexts.
The final concert, at the Centro Cultural de Belém, marks the bicentenary of Beethoven’s death with performances of String Quartet Op. 59 No. 3 and the Grosse Fuge, Op. 133, works of extraordinary power and transcendence.
