Dmitri Shostakovich’s first venture into the world of the symphony and a work by Igor Stravinsky premièred in 1930, less than two decades after the tumultuous first performance of The Rite of Spring, which brought the composer world recognition. This will be our tribute to two of the greatest twentieth-century Russian composers.
Stravinsky’s work is also a tribute to an orchestra, given that it was commissioned by the conductor Sergei Kusevitski to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Boston Symphony Orchestra.
Dmitri Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 1 was premièred in 1926 and met with tremendous success. The work, which he completed at the age of nineteen, was written as the composer’s graduation piece at the Petrograd Conservatory. Along with multiple and varied citations of other composers, it also denotes the influence of Stravinsky and Prokofiev. The transparency of this symphony presents a clear contrast with the complex, heavy, sophisticated, and almost Mahlerian, orchestration that was to be found in the composer’s last works in this field.
