Bruckner left his monumental Symphony No. 9 in D Minor unfinished, and it was later premièred posthumously in Vienna in 1903. It seems to have been the composer himself, fearing that he would not be able to finish the work (dedicated to the “beloved God”) and opposed to the idea of a sorrowful Adagio as the last movement, who suggested the use of his own Te deum as the finale. This suggestion is usually followed in performances, although new proposals for the finale are constantly being made, based on drafts left by the composer.
All of the movements call for great emotional commitment and remarkable technical skills on the part of the orchestra and its conductor Pedro Neves – a specialist in Bruckner’s work – while in the Te deum the eulogy is sung at the full limit of all the voices, soloists and choir alike.
