Presenting SEArch’s “5 Houses for Mars”, Morris will explain how the innovative “live/work” structures are to be robotically built from in-situ resourced utilized (ISRU) materials found on Martian surface and atmosphere that include: polyethylene, regolith (Martian concrete) and ice, in advance of the first pioneering humans’ arrival on the red planet. Architect and professor, Michael Morris is the co-founder of SEArch+ (Space Exploration Architecture) and Morris Sato Studio, which he founded/created with his wife, Yoshiko Sato. Graduated in environmental design and architecture, he is fluent in design, science and art.

Critical Distance 2019

As a contributing architect to the world’s most iconic space agency – NASA – Morris explores the possibility of building and and inhabiting in extreme conditions. Before the pioneering arrival of humans on the red planet, Morris is researching forms and structures capable of leading man to explore it and live on the planet. This ongoing research was awarded by NASA and the recognition extends to his his 13-year career in architectural theory and teaching – at Harvard, Cornell, Columbia, Massachusetts and Illinois Institutes of Technology. In 2008, with Columbia University’s Space Exploration Research Laboratory, in collaboration with Morris Sato, he was responsible for designing the visionary costumes of the opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympic Games. In 2016, the Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum, in New York, premiered MOTH, a Nasa/Pratt X-HAB project focused on the Mars Transit Habitat Project. Morris is working on the prototypes of the future structures, that will be robotically built, with NASA’s Langley Research Center (LCR) and United Technologies Space Systems (UTAS).
