Mainly considered to be an instrumental composer, Beethoven played a major role in the development of the German Lied, not only because of the way in which he used the pianoforte, but also because of the way in which he appropriated poetry. Beethoven did not seek to illustrate or comment on the poetic text. The composer wished simply to achieve a genuine marriage between the words and the music. Goethe was his preferred poet.
This concert, which joins pianist Melissa Fontoura with baritone José Corvelo and soprano Inês Simões, is dedicated precisely to the repertoire of Beethoven’s lieder.
