Songs for Shakespeare consists of original musical and performative material where the starting point is Shakespeare’s words, taken from various sources and with no apparent connection between them. By gluing these pieces together in a patchwork, a new narrative is created that unveils the Shakespearean universe from one end to the other.
Conceived by Maria João and João Farinha, who have been partners for over 10 years in the jazz/electronic project OGRE, the idea arose to expand their basic line-up of electric pianos, synthesisers, electronics and drums to include a chamber ensemble that will bring out a palette of colours not possible until now, thus vitalising this Shakespearean universe with a modern twist.
This show is an experience accessible to all audiences, requiring no prior knowledge of the most famous playwright, nor is it overly intellectual, just as his plays. In this sense, this concert can act as an introduction to the marvellous heritage of this author’s body of work, and even possibly spark greater curiosity about this poet, playwright and actor on the part of participants.
The performance also features the precious contribution of André Gago, who will help bring these dusty words to life.
⇒ This concert is part of the Belém Soundcheck Festival.
