Maria Callas – Letters and Memories, by Tom Volf, with Monica Bellucci
With the publication of Maria Callas – Lettres & Mémoires at the end of 2019, Monica Bellucci made her stage debut with a series of readings of excerpts from this work.
This unique show allows us to discover first hand the true story behind the legend of Maria Callas — from her modest upbringing in New York to the wartime years spent in Athens, from her discreet debut in opera to the pinnacle of a planetary career marked by scandals and personal ordeals, and from her idealised love for her husband to her passion for Onassis. It lifts the veil that covered both Maria — the vulnerable woman, split between her life on the world’s stages and her private life — and Callas, the artist who fell victim to the demands that she made of herself and the perpetual battle that she waged with her own voice, and who, despite the loneliness of her last years spent in Paris, continued to work tirelessly until her death at the age of 53.
This performance is part of the 38th Almada Festival, offering us a fascinating and disturbing self-portrait of the greatest voice of the twentieth century.
