Libidinal Lake is the latest installation/concert by Jonathan Uliel Saldanha. This colossal work turns the CCB’s Main Auditorium into a multi-scalar system in which the stage is largely overtaken by the surface of a synthetic lake that serves as the reflective medium where the performers-militia, the audience and the musicians form a viral ecosystem. The body of water is a matrix where lithium, red mercury, and bioluminescent fungi interrelate with lighting mechanics in order to reveal occult contaminations and transform them into contagious vectors. All aspects take part in this formation, consciously or not, as is slowly brought to light throughout this durational performance.
Undergirding the inorganic dynamics at play is an esoteric system of alchemical elements and numerological alignments. These processes are the mineral interior of Libidinal Lake, affecting the synchronistic meshwork of activity that works to unhinge its uncanny neon circulation. Open secrets hide in plain sight. Nothing seems to act as it should: perceptions disfigure into distorted geometry, temporalities modulate into overlapped dilations and contractions, harmonic palettes extrapolate into semi-synthetic orchestrations. Libidinal Lake drags you into a parallel dimension that is somehow slightly off.
A lymphatic network of inorganic derivatives feeds on the continuous data-flow of stock market fluctuations, becoming the infrastructural seduction of polymorphic humanoid organisms as they become a toxic totemic carcass. The modelling of germ occultures further deforms any linear reading of expenditure. There is only surplus value here. Long-range positive feedback mechanisms overtake the safe containment of normative constraint, extending out the ghosts of a third-wave cybernetic formulation. Here, hypercapitalist realism turns into an aesthetic mutation of the not too distant economic science fiction of Libidinal Lake. – Lendl Barcelos
Carte Blanche to Jonathan Uliel Saldanha
Jonathan Uliel Saldanha, composer, visual artist and scenic constructor, who investigates intersection zones between pre-language, alterity, science fiction, sound as a vector of contagion and the tension between the synthetic and the landscape, is challenged by the CCB to develop a curatorship of a series of concerts involving musicians from Uganda, Brazil, Turkey, France, Haiti, among other proposals. A Carte Blanche that reveals new Worlds to us.
