The project The Story of Babar, The Little Elephant brings us the stage adaptation of Histoire de Babar, le Petit Éléfant, by Jean de Brunhoff, based on Francis Poulenc’s composition for piano and narrator.
Published for the first time in 1939, Jean de Brunhoff’s children’s story, with illustrations by the author, tells how a little elephant lost his mother in the forest, killed by a hunter, and how he arrived in the city and was adopted by an old lady who brought him up as a human being, dressing him in suitable clothes and teaching him good manners. The little elephant was called Babar and, after his adventures in the city, he returned to the forest, where he became king.
