The Lisbon that witnessed the birth of Fogo Fogo is a vibrant and special city: it is a place that welcomes the whole of Africa, especially the part that speaks Portuguese, both that of the future and that of the past. A Lisbon where it is still possible to discover collectors’ items in the form of vinyl records by the Tubarões and all the obscure pearls of the personal recordings produced as a result of the diaspora from Cape Verde in the 1980s and 1990s, and which the world never got to hear. It was in that Lisbon, that Fogo Fogo exploded onto the scene, like a volcano.
The project is the work of Francisco Rebelo (bass), João Gomes (keyboards), Márcio Silva (drums), Danilo Lopes and David Pessoa (vocals/guitar) and results from the experience and energy of these musicians whom we have grown used to seeing on stages all around the country. Added together, the five of them have almost 120 years of experience as professional musicians. All of them are extremely talented, and have perfected their skills even further with the experience that they gained at some of the world’s greatest musical venues, through the various projects in which they have participated.
Nástio Mosquito, an Angolan poet and musician, wrote about Fogo Fogo as follows: “Who was it that brought them into existence? I listen to Fogo Fogo and I forget about diversity. I listen to Fogo Fogo and I don’t think about multiculturalism. I listen to Fogo Fogo and I feel that they belong to me. Being at a concert by Fogo Fogo feeds those parts within us that are starved of human interaction. It is a sweat-perfume that reminds us that sometimes it’s enough just to feel the desire!”
