Fidelio was Beethoven’s only opera and took on several versions – the final one, which we will listen, was staged in 1814 in Vienna. It is an opera with spoken dialogues, which mirrors the wave of liberation that swept Europe after the French Revolution. It tells the story of Leonore’s love and heroism, who disguises herself as Fidelio in order to free her husband Florestan (imprisoned for political reasons). In the end, justice and love prevail.
