Public history is returning to the CCB. More than ever, there is an urgent need to think about the future by critically revisiting the past, for a broad and non-academic audience, who are called upon to participate in these Conversations with History.
On 18 July, we will be bringing Manuel Alegre to the CCB.
Born in Águeda, Manuel Alegre studied in Coimbra. A supporter of the antifascist resistance movement, he was involved in the war in Angola. He became a political prisoner and spent ten years in exile in Algeria. He was the leader of the Patriotic Front for National Liberation and later became one of the first members of parliament for the Socialist Party, being involved in the drafting of the Preamble for the Portuguese Constitution after the Revolution of 1974. He was vice-president of the Portuguese Parliament, a member of the State Council and stood as a candidate for the Portuguese Presidency. Although they were both banned, Praça da Canção and O Canto were regarded as iconic books in the struggle for freedom. The winner of both the Pessoa Prize and the Camões Prize, he received honorary doctorates from the Universities of Lisbon and Pádua, where he has a chair named after him.
