At the beginning of the Mass of the Dead, in the liturgy of the Roman Catholic Church, the congregation sings: Requiem aeternam dona eis, Domine (Eternal rest give unto them, O Lord). This canonical text is usually referred to in short as the Requiem, and, as such, it has attracted the attention of so many composers. The term has been maintained, even when different passages of the Bible are sung in German, although such cases are distinguished by the name of the German Requiem. It is to this last tradition that this work by Johannes Brahms belongs, being the result of studies made about music from the past, namely the works of composers such as Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, J. S. Bach, Handel, Palestrina and Schütz. However, instead of commiseration, Brahms preferred a note of peace and hope.
