In HESTNES FERREIRA – FORM | MATTER | LIGHT, editors Alexandra Saraiva, Patrícia Bento d’Almeida, and Paulo Tormenta Pinto offer an interpretation of the work of architect Raúl Hestnes Ferreira (1931–2018). In the first section, the editors and exhibition curators revisit the 13 projects presented in the exhibition, drawing on the memory of Hestnes Ferreira’s singular and transcultural career and linking each project to one of the three core concepts underpinning the exhibition. Then, other authors who crossed paths with the architect are invited to write about his work or their professional and/or personal relationships with him. The third part features interviews, including two previously unpublished ones, conducted as part of Alexandra Saraiva’s doctoral research. The fourth and final section presents a list of the architect’s works and the collaborators from his atelier.
Hestnes Ferreira’s architecture achieves a sublime timelessness, whether through formal simplicity or material expression. Space serves as the unifying element, with construction providing weight and proportion. Light and shadow play a pivotal role in this process of abstraction, creating singular moments that blend into the experience of each place.
The book launch will take place on 25 January at 4:30 pm in the MAC/CCB Auditorium. It will feature contributions from the exhibition curators and book editors Alexandra Saraiva, Patrícia Bento d’Almeida, and Paulo Tormenta Pinto, as well as authors Alexandre Alves Costa, Gonçalo Canto Moniz, Jorge Figueira, Michel Toussaint, and Bernardo Pizarro Miranda, alongside Luís Martinho Urbano from the Marques da Silva Foundation.
