Established by the Architecture Centre MAC/CCB to honour the architect Diogo Seixas Lopes (1972–2016)—a pivotal figure in Portuguese architectural thought and the first Consultant of Garagem Sul—these creative grants aim to foster and consolidate the collective development of critical thinking and knowledge around the annual thematic lines of the Architecture Centre.

The competition is open to individuals or collectives whose research focuses on architecture and seeks to provide financial support for research, creation, and project execution. Two grants, each worth €10,000 per year, will be awarded, with guidance from Mariana Pestana, Chief Curator of the Architecture Centre at MAC/CCB.

Applications are open from 17 January to 16 February 2025, and must include the following: a Curriculum Vitae, motivation letter, portfolio, and a project proposal detailing its relevance to the thematic lines of the Architecture Centre.

The evaluation and selection process will take place between February and March 2025. The jury includes Julia Albani (external), Marta Mestre (Curator, MAC/CCB), and Sofia Passadouro (Education and Mediation, MAC/CCB). Selected projects will be announced on 2 April 2025, the date of the reopening of the Architecture Centre.

For the inaugural edition of the Diogo Seixas Lopes Creative Grants, the thematic focus will be Interspecies.

About the Diogo Seixas Lopes Creative Grants

Established by the MAC/CCB Architecture Centre in honor of architect Diogo Seixas Lopes (1972–2016)—a pivotal figure in Portuguese architectural thought and the first Consultant of Garagem Sul—the Creative Grants are awarded annually to support emerging generations in architecture.

About the MAC/CCB Architecture Centre

The Architecture Centre of MAC/CCB addresses contemporary issues and themes through the lens of the built environment. It explores collective forms of knowledge creation through exhibitions, residencies, fellowships, publications, and public programs. From an interdisciplinary and experimental perspective, it creates space to explore and test possibilities, aiming to materialise convivial, more-than-human, and intersectional spaces. It calls upon the multiple scales and spheres of architectural action to participate in its programming.

In April, the Architecture Centre will inaugurate the Garagem Sul space with an architectural project by the Swiss-Portuguese studio BUREAU. This project reimagines the garage as a flexible space, accommodating exhibitions, workspaces, public events and communal gatherings.

About the exhibition Interspecies

Interspecies presents historical and contemporary evidence of humanity’s enduring desire to understand, connect with, and coexist with other species. By exploring listening devices, cohabitation spaces, and decentralised governance mechanisms, the exhibition critically examines how European society has been shaping more-than-human realities.

At a time defined by posthumanist philosophy and the climate crisis, Interspecies draws inspiration from the Romantic period, which celebrated subjectivity and imagination, fostering a renewed appreciation for nature in response to Enlightenment thought and the Industrial Revolution.

The exhibition also features two outdoor interventions: one for humans and birds by Studio Ossidiana, and another for humans and fish by Superflex + KWY.
