Talk

Bringing together specialists from Portugal and Spain, this conversation explores monumentalised public space in Lisbon and Barcelona, and the disputes between past and present that unfold within it. Particular attention will be paid to the urban setting surrounding MAC/CCB, namely the Praça do Império complex, which has been the subject of studies, debates, and contestation over the years, and to the monument to Antonio López y López in Plaça d’Idrissa Diallo (Ciutat Vella), Barcelona.

(registration required)

A guided tour to the urban and monumental setting of Praça do Império with anthropologist Elsa Peralta, historian Pedro Cardim, and Portuguese-Angolan artist Márcio Carvalho, creator of Memórias para 14 Bustos (2026). The work proposes the creation of an alternative site of memory in the Belém Tropical Botanical Garden—one that can recall, reinterpret, and recontextualise past events such as the human zoo established for the Portuguese World Exhibition (1940), while challenging Belém’s imperial urban context. (Memórias para 14 Bustos was included in the exhibition Olhares Críticos no Arquivo Colonial – Sombras e Memórias, at MUHNAC, April–August 2026, curated by Márcio Carvalho, Nuno Silas, and Sophie Kotanyi.)

We would like to thank MUHNAC and the Tropical Botanical Garden for authorising this tour. The tour will be conducted in English, with no translation.

Limited to 25 participants.
Free admission, subject to prior registration by completing the form available here by 17 November 2026.
