Museum
Considered one of the 10 best exhibitions of 2024 by Frieze magazine.
This exhibition traces the singular path of Belgian filmmaker, writer, and artist Chantal Akerman (Brussels, 1950 – Paris, 2015). From her beginnings in Brussels to the Mexican desert, from her early films to her final installations in 2015, this is the first major exhibition in Lisbon dedicated to the Brussels-born artist, featuring unique, previously unseen production images and working documents from her archives. Following the stages of her career, the exhibition revisits the years and places Akerman inhabited and filmed, encompassing a wide range of media, from film and television to writing and installation. Chantal Akerman inspired an entire generation and remains a model for many filmmakers and artists today; and Travelling invites us to a rich journey through images and archives—from the comic to the tragic, from the intimacy of a bedroom to the expanse of the desert.
Exhibition conceived by Centre for Fine Arts, Brussels (Bozar), the Fondation Chantal Akerman, and Royal Film Archive of Belgium (CINEMATEK), Brussels, and produced in collaboration with MAC/CCB for its presentation in Lisbon.
In partnership with the Cinemateca Portuguesa, a film series dedicated to Chantal Akerman will be programmed.
The Centro Cultural de Belém Foundation reserves the right to collect, store and use recordings of image, sound and voice, for the purposes of dissemination and for preserving the memory of its cultural and artistic activities, as well as its spaces.
