Berardo Collection
The Berardo Collection stands as a testament to the most pivotal artistic movements from the 20th century to the contemporary era, featuring artists like Pablo Picasso, Marcel Duchamp, Max Ernst, Piet Mondrian, Joan Miró, Francis Bacon, Yves Klein, Andy Warhol, Frank Stella, Gerhard Richter, and more.
Assembled over two decades by José Berardo, this collection attains international acclaim for the intrinsic value of its paramount works. Encompassing approximately 70 artistic movements—including Cubism, Dadaism, Surrealism, Abstract Expressionism, Neo-Dadaism, Nouveau Réalisme, and Pop Art—it comprises nearly 900 works by over 500 artists. The Berardo Collection not only exudes a robust museological essence but also serves as an educational platform. Its internationalist outlook, spanning a century chronologically, positions it as a genuine observatory and catalyst for contemplation on the art history of this period.
Starting in 1909 and traversing the gamut of significant movements, including the latest developments in contemporary artistic creation, the collection boasts works by eminent artists like Bruce Nauman, Julião Sarmento, Gabriel Orozco, Alexander Calder, Vito Acconci, Larry Bell, Christian Boltanski, Nam June Paik, Bill Viola, and Andreas Gursky. Notably, it incorporates a representation of Portuguese art, featuring works by Alberto Carneiro, Maria Helena Vieira da Silva, Paula Rego, Helena Almeida, Pedro Cabrita Reis, Fernando Lemos, and others.
