Talk
Eighteen albums of original songs released over the course of almost half a century, comprising nearly two hundred songs. A singular presence and an enduring influence. A body of writing as unmistakable as it is multifaceted. An intense life on stage, where songs are continually reimagined—often in radical ways—for new audiences. A lasting commitment to the work of fellow songwriters, shaped by a perspective that brings together artistic maturity and the elixir of eternal youth. More than eighty years into a rich and remarkable life, this is a celebration of Sérgio Godinho through eighty songs.
The Centro Cultural de Belém Foundation reserves the right to collect, store and use recordings of image, sound and voice, for the purposes of dissemination and for preserving the memory of its cultural and artistic activities, as well as its spaces. Programme
Session 1 — 8 October
Freedom Is Passing Through Here
The records from exile that heralded a rising tide. The dreams and slogans of songs at boiling point. The traps of anthems and the new forms of captivity. Dotting the i’s. A dialogue with History and photographs of many fires. An ever-watchful and nonconformist gaze. Peace and bread are still on the agenda.
Session 2 — 15 October
Affinities of the Middle Brother – Influences and Encounters
Other people’s songs and songs with others. From the encounter with José Mário Branco to the adventure of Assessores, taking in Jorge Constante Pereira, Shila, Vitorino, Fausto, Jorge Palma, Trovante, Rui Veloso, Da Weasel, Silence 4, Milton, Ivan Lins, Chico, Clã, Caetano, Márcia, Capicua and A garota não. Plus, the inspiration of José Afonso, coincidences with Conjunto António Mafra and the dearly cherished songs of many worlds.
Session 3 — 22 October
Characters and Settings – Scenes from a Film
Marta and Etelvina, Rita and Barnabé, Casimiro and Alice in the Land of Table Football. Carolina and Mariana Pais. The Chorus of Old Women. In the characters of the songs, one could already glimpse the fiction writer who began by writing for children, long before the novels of the new millennium. Porto, so close by; Lisbon at daybreak; and villages that do not even appear on the map. Micro-stories and sweeping tales.
Session 4 — 29 October
Extraordinary Hours – Love Songs
The many times of love — and of love lost. News of the mystery: nights gone by and certainties — but also ambushes and deceptions. Craftsmanship and counterfeiting. A little sparkle in the eyes — and the cart well before the horse.
