A concert recreating the album Birth of the Cool by Miles Davis, released in 1957 and considered a landmark in jazz history. Birth of the Cool is often cited as the precursor to the style known as cool jazz, which emerged between the late 1940s and early 1950s, characterised by a softer, more relaxed approach in contrast to the emotional intensity of bebop.
The album was also groundbreaking for its sophisticated and complex arrangements, many of which were crafted by Gil Evans, a frequent collaborator of Davis.
This work not only solidified Miles Davis as one of the most innovative musicians in jazz but also altered the course of the genre, opening new directions and sonic possibilities that continue to resonate today.
The album helped establish the foundations of modern jazz, influencing a generation of musicians who began exploring new harmonies, forms, and improvisational approaches. It also had a lasting impact, contributing to the perception of jazz as a more sophisticated and complex art form.
This concert will also feature the premiere of two new compositions: one by Carlos Azevedo and another by ESMAE student Simão Raimundo.
