Approaching Bach’s music within a jazz context is, to say the least, a bold proposal. From the outset, I felt I should do it with a strong, fresh, and prejudice-free gesture, taking advantage of listeners’ expectations. I wanted to continue exploring polytemporal music, with a nod to Steve Reich’s phasing, as well as experimenting with musical collage by overlapping elements from different compositions, fostering new sonic and referential relationships.
This project is a blend of reverence and irreverence: irreverence in transforming Bach’s music at a fundamental level, and reverence in imitating the German master’s gesture—mixture. The mixture of the popular with the sacred, of intellectual construction with the physical dimension so present in his keyboard music.
Quodlibet is the result of a dialogue between this music, written over several months, and the voices of some of the leading figures in Portuguese jazz, who have contributed their perspective, imagination, and sound. — Daniel Bernardes
