Notes of Music
King Dinis not only founded the University of Lisbon but also established, in 1323, the Chair of Music, whose academic nature will be discussed. The king’s importance to musical activity is, however, mainly connected to his role within the Galician-Portuguese troubadour lyric tradition, as both patron and creator.
Among his many cantigas, seven have come down to us with musical notation in the so-called Sharrer Parchment, discovered in 1990 in the Torre do Tombo. This document reveals a facet of his art that the poetic texts, known since the 19th century, had not made apparent.
This lecture takes place in connection with the concert The Songs of King Dinis by the ensemble Na Rota do Peregrino, on February 27, at 8:00 pm.
The Centro Cultural de Belém Foundation reserves the right to collect, store and use recordings of image, sound and voice, for the purposes of dissemination and for preserving the memory of its cultural and artistic activities, as well as its spaces.
