Notes of Music

The symphony was one of the musical genres that most stood out in 18th-century European culture. It is estimated that nearly 20,000 symphonies were composed during this period, in a wide variety of formats. After reviewing the origins and early development of the genre, this lecture explores the history of its stylistic transformation in the final decades of the 18th century, considering the contributions of multiple figures across different regions.

 

This lecture takes place in connection with the concert by the London Mozart Players, on April 10, at 8:00pm.

Luís M. Santos earned his PhD in Historical Musical Sciences from NOVA FCSH (2024), supported by a Doctoral Scholarship from the FCT | Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia. His dissertation, supervised by Paulo Ferreira de Castro, focuses on symphonic music in Lisbon between 1910 and 1933. He has presented around fifty papers at national and international conferences, both in Portugal and abroad, and his research has appeared in various musicological publications. In 2016, he received the Joaquim de Vasconcelos Award from SPIM | Portuguese Society for Music Research.

Since 2010, he has been a regular contributor to Casa da Música, Teatro Nacional de São Carlos, and Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian, writing musicological texts, and since 2013, he has also been a guest lecturer at the Department of Musical Sciences at NOVA FCSH.
