On the day that the editorial team of a small independent investigative journalism project bids farewell to its first home, Carolina returns after a long absence. Her return will bring her face to face with the newspaper’s new direction and uncover several delicate unresolved issues. A play about freedom of the press and fundamental values, set within a group where professional ties are intertwined with intimate relationships of love and friendship, and where each person is dealing, in their own way, with a recent trauma that has affected them all.
The play explores complex moral and ethical dilemmas, the tension between ideals and survival, and the personal cost of pursuing the truth in a system that penalises dissent. Fumo is a reflection on loyalty, friendship and the compromises required when confronting injustice.
The text was written as part of the international project Writing on New Realities, drawing on artistic residencies in Portugal and Turkey. It was published in a Turkish edition by Habitus Kitap (2025).
