Being a pauliteiro is a source of pride in Miranda do Douro. Traditionally associated with selected groups from each village, pauliteiros have found new ways of keeping the tradition alive and sharing it through schools. Today, the sound of sticks echoes through corridors, playgrounds, and impromptu rehearsals, where young people learn from one another, practise steps, and share lhaços (the traditional dance steps) as if sharing a living language.
With the support of the work developed by Plano Nacional das Artes, new spaces for learning and participation have emerged, giving greater visibility to female and mixed groups and bringing more young people closer to Mirandese culture. In this performance, dance, music, and the Mirandese language come together in a single gesture. On stage, pauliteiros and musicians — all students — celebrate a living tradition, carried into the present with pride, energy, and a strong sense of community.
