Today, MAC/CCB inaugurated the Guest Works of Mostra Espanha 2026, in the presence of Portugal’s Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport, Margarida Balseiro Lopes; Spain’s Minister of Culture, Ernest Urtasun Domènech; and the Director of the Fundación María José Jove Art Centre, Susana González.
Maruja Mallo’s “Basuras” (1930) and “Naturaleza viva” (1943) arrive in Lisbon following a major retrospective at the Museo Reina Sofía. Spanning decades and geographies—from the political turmoil of pre-war Madrid to the fullness of colour of the artist’s exile in Valparaíso—these works embody the theme of the 9th edition of Mostra Espanha: “Spain in Motion: Diversity and Sustainable Futures.”
At the same time, the Museu Nacional de Arte Contemporânea do Chiado is presenting Joaquín Sorolla’s “Pescadoras valencianas,” extending the Iberian dialogue that has been taking place since 2009.
Maruja Mallo’s works are on view on Floor 2 of MAC/CCB until 29 November.
