The album Kind of Blue (1959) is unanimously regarded as one of the most important and influential records in jazz history and remains a bestseller to this day. Recorded in just two sessions in 1959, the album brings together a sextet of extraordinary musicians and marked a new era in jazz, in which Miles Davis moved away from the speed and harmonic complexity of bebop and opened the door to modal jazz—a more lyrical, spacious language with greater melodic freedom.
In this lecture-concert, emphasis will be placed on the compositional aspects of the album’s five tracks, all written by Miles Davis (two in collaboration with pianist Bill Evans), and how these seemingly simple compositions serve as perfect vehicles for the development of a new improvisational language. For this purpose, a sextet of young Portuguese jazz talents active in recent projects has been assembled.
