Chão Maior is a band formed in 2019, composed of Yaw Tembe, Norberto Lobo, Ricardo Martins, Leonor Arnaut, and João Almeida. The musicians come from diverse backgrounds ranging from rock to jazz and from folk to marching bands. These elements are explored here in a transparent manner, aiming to create a horizontal and communal space where composition and improvisation coexist, drawing closer to the social systems embedded in Sun Ra’s music, Eddie Gale’s Ghetto Music, Ornette Coleman’s harmolodics, and the ecstatic atmospheres of Alice Coltrane.

With two original albums, Drawing Circles (2021) and Snakes & Thunder (2025), they open the celebrations of the centenary of Miles Davis and John Coltrane at CCB.
