Opera
Candinho portrays the childhood of Cândido Portinari. In one act and ten scenes, the opera blends reality and fiction to recreate life in the painter’s home village, from children’s games to the moments that sparked the artistic awakening of one of Brazil’s greatest artists.
Young Candinho splits his time between lessons with Father Josué, band parades where his father plays the euphonium, and playing with friends. When the circus arrives, the clown Beringela gives him a mark that grants free entry — but Candinho falls asleep and misses the only performance.
Consoled by Beringela, he is encouraged to imagine and draw the circus he never saw, marking the beginning of his artistic path. Inspired by Portinari’s work, the sets and costumes enrich this story of creativity, community support and the journey that leads Candinho to leave for Rio de Janeiro.
