Sexta Maior
Sexta Maior Cycle – Renaissance Music
Os Músicos do Tejo and Sofia Dias & Vítor Roriz seek to create a path that can be perceived from the outside, sensed as right or wrong, and that stirs both inner and outer movement. Their aim is to unite music and dance in tribute to those who danced to survive, who shaped the nation-state, and who were central to the art of courtly metaphysics, though always exposed before all eyes.
In this spirit, they come together through their shared love of the Baroque, the 17th and 18th centuries, dance and dance music, birds, texts about dance, teachers who played the violin and composed for their students, and rituals where ministers and ambassadors had to dance—at least correctly, at best elegantly—without ever overshadowing the King, whose step set the standard. They draw on treatises where absence was as striking as engraving, on textual labyrinths, on words turned into images, on rhythmic repetition, and on the excess of forms where everything is wind, flame, and movement, with bodies twisting in mystical ecstasy, captured mid-transformation in an endless continuum.
As part of this recital, a conference, whose title is yet to be announced, by Paulo Pires do Vale will take place in Sala Lopes-Graça on June 26 at 6:30 pm. The conference will be spoken in Portuguese without translation.
