The Eiffel Tower did not yet stand nearby when, in 1867, Johann Strauss Jr. and his orchestra performed the instrumental version of The Blue Danube waltz at the Exposition Universelle in Paris, before diplomats from around the world. The success was such that he became known as the «Waltz King»,an authentic international pop star. It was the herald of a tradition that endures to this day on a global scale — the New Year’s Concert.

The elegance of Strauss’s timeless melodies continues to transmit the energy we need to face new cycles with positive vibrations and a full heart. To toast 2026, this concert adds a touch of glamour from both ends of Europe: from Moscow, the exuberance of Khachaturian and the romantic fervor of Tchaikovsky; from the sunlit Iberian Peninsula, the vigorous joy of Freitas Branco and the salero of Falla.

Pre-concert talk by musicologist Rui Campos Leitão.
